Iranian Blogger, Reza Valizadeh, Arrested
By Curt on Nov 27, 2007 in Reza Valizadeh, Iran, Imprisoned bloggers
According to our friend Hamid Tehrani, Persian editor for Global Voices, Iranian blogger Reza Valizadeh was arrested today. Reza runs, or ran, a site called Baznegar.
Some bloggers, says Hamid, believe that Reza was the first blogger to reveal Iranian president Ahmadinejad’s overpriced dogs that his security team uses. They were said to have purchased four dogs from Germany for a total of $600,000.00.
Iran is among the most egregious offenders when it comes to locking bloggers up. Past arrestees include Soheil Asafy, Sina Motallebi, Arash Sigarchi and Mojtaba Saminejad and Omid Sheikhan, among many, many others.
Iranian “law” is a joke and the authorities there are not averse to arresting pregnant woman bloggers, so hopefully we can simply keep this in the public consciousness and not let Reza fade as others, including Omid, have.
By the way, if anyone can tell us what happened to Omid, sentenced to 126 lashes and a year-and-a-half in jail for satirical comments about Iran’s leaders on his blog, we would appreciate it.
