Our friend Hamid Tehrani has told us that Omid Reza Misayafi has died in prison in Iran. Omid was sentenced in December to two and a half years in prison for “insulting” Iranian religious leaders.
“(T)he reason for his death,” says Hamid, “has not been announced but he was in very bad psychological condition.”
Considering torture and other types of mistreatment are par for the course for free speech prisoners in Iranian prisons, Omid’s death may well have been a direct result of Iranian government actions. Considering the government usually places bloggers in prison with the most dangerous criminals, his death may only have been an indirect result. Either way, the men of the government of Iran and its prisons have a lot to answer for.
In the meantime, for what it’s worth, our heartfelt condolences go out to Omid’s family. They’ve killed one of us.

Update: See here for an account of Omid’s death, insofar as we can determine it at this point.

This is a sad day
I posted this case in mi blog.
We must to do more, por example the situation of Hoder and other bloggers in prison.
This is a sad article. It just shows how blessed we are to have the freedom to say what we want without having to fear retaliation from our government. I am proud of our rights and wish others could enjoy the same rights in their countries.
This is absolute outrage!
The government of Iran is responsible for this death.
Yet another waste of a life.
I remember being on a march in London against the illegal & immoral war in Iraq, one women carried a poster which read -
“I marched for myself.
I marched for my children.
I marched for my grandchildren.
When will they ever learn?”.
It sickens me that this world does not seem capable of learning the lessons of history. And killing still goes on in the name of religion. The question is not ‘when will they ever learn’ – more like ‘are they capable of learning. I worry about the world I have brought my children into.
My deepest condolences to his family and friends
We won’t let his death go unnoticed, we have to call to prosecute officials who were responsible in his death.
We shouldn’t stop now.
Thanks for your support!
How tragic and sad.
Cheers to the brave Iranian people seeking a more just and free society.
this is our right to fight to get our rights…this is our right to send our voice to all over the world to come and and support us…
down with Islamic republic of iran,,such a fake regime…
here shahriar bozorg(babak) ,just i was supporting of iranian demonstrators in malaysia, kuala lumpur.just supporting iranians who suffering and fighting to get their rights..i was sued by embassy of islamic republic of iran in kuala lumpur and eventually i forced to flee to save my life from danger and wondering around the world without any save shelter,so a day after, two number of of my friends with the name
Arman Taheri and mojtaba Kabiri whom was a supporter and reporter of that event, they have been captured and become a detainee just because of supporting demonstrators.
is this really a crime to support iranians and defending them to stop killing innocent people by the anti-riot police of iran???
is this right to treat with us this “brutality” action???
it was such a real view of that event that all press in all over the world talk and discussing about it…and still continued….
Dear Curt, I didn’t know you were back in business. I have to put your site on my sidebar.
I’m so sorry to hear about Omid. Have you been to @iranelection? It’s been infiltrated, I think. One time it took me over half an hour to back out there. Maybe it was my computer, maybe not. Doesn’t matter. I’m on Tehran time.
I have read some very passionate and informative comments. Yes, please include my condolences for the famly and friends.
Also, I agree that the Iranian people have the right to demand their freedom and justice. It is sad that our president does not. He still wants to speak to AN. I cannot forgive him for this. He could stopped this. All he had to do was let the people of Iran know he supported their rights unconditionally.
THAT IS WHAT PRESIDENT BUSH DID when the Ukranians fought for thier corrupted election, and he also kicked Syria out of Lebanon. But I guess becuase he did one thing the people did not agree with (except for the Iraqies!), he deserves no credit.
He will always have my gratitude. REGIME CHANGE IN IRAN! Let them try and touch me!
Free Iran
Rest In Peace, NEDA
once again another innocent life is taken in the name of religion, in the name of national security, in the name of whatever… how is it that this regime is not learning from its own country’s history? do these mullahs think they are going to rule for ever? don’t they know every unjustified act is going to backlash at them one day?
i have been in this blood thirsty regimes’ person and been tortured by them, while i was a 14 years old kid! my crime= not being muslim, i am baha’i. and you know what’s funny? my best friend who was and is a muslim was being kept and tortured right next to my cell. his crime= being my friend!
where in the world can you tell this story and not be looked at as if your a good fictionist. this is who this regime is. lower than anything you can imagine. i hope rest in peace amongst thousands of others who were murder so innocently.
I think you might enjoy watching this short film I created on the persecution of the Baha’is in Iran, with an emphasis on my grandfather’s execution.
another innocent life..
Sad day for All of us.
my prays and thoughts are with him. He is in a better place.
Rest in Peace Omid.
IRAN is a so called shias country and is a Terror funding Nation , well these Basterds of Iran keep fingering my brothers the Jews
who cares? one less towel head terrorist..America should block the internet from iran…we don’t need this dirty people……let them kill each other, and by all means NO MORE PERSIANS ALLOWED IN AMERICA..BAD PEOPLE
Hell racist freak. While I do respect your right to free speech, even when you publicly express that the U.S. should have the right to control what anyone else can do, I do reserve the right to label you an inbred twat. Now, do fuck off. That’s all.
Sounds kinky.
